The Top Attractions in Noe Valley For Locals or Tourists

Bordered by parks on all sides, Noe Valley in San Francisco is a charming, family-friendly neighborhood in the middle of a big city. Located just south of the Castro and on the western side of the Mission, Noe Valley is a sunny oasis in the middle of busier areas. Filled with cute shops, excellent bakeries and restaurants, and a few nightlife options, there are numerous attractions in Noe Valley.

Bakeries

When in Noe Valley, you have to go to Noe Valley Bakery. Oftentimes, the bakery has a line out the door, but it is well worth the wait. The bakery first opened in 1995, creating in-house pastries, bread, cookies, cakes, and more. They offer a wide selection of gluten-free tarts, cakes, and cookies, including a delectable raspberry frangipane tart. The Noe Valley Bakery is known for its seasonal items and holiday treats, including king cakes for Mardi Gras. If you are looking for freshly baked French pastries and coffee, look no further than La Boulangerie, which offers sweet and savory croissants and brunch and lunch items.

Restaurants

Uma Casa, an inviting Portuguese restaurant with beautiful interiors, offers a wide selection. From its pan-fried whole branzino and grilled 26-ounce porterhouse steak, there’s something delicious for everyone on the menu. They also have plenty of sharable small plates, such as braised and seared octopus, crispy polenta with kale, Madeira braised mushrooms, and grilled broccolini.

Another staple in the neighborhood is Firefly Restaurant, which has been around since 1993. Enjoy their quaint outdoor seating in their courtyard, or reserve a table inside. It’s known for its thoughtful farm-to-table cuisine and offers a seasonal menu based on what’s in season. Many of its dishes are naturally gluten-free, which makes it an excellent place for anyone with food allergies. They also provide numerous desserts, including key lime pie with toasted meringue, and offer indoor and outdoor seating.

Another neighborhood favorite is Hamano Sushi, specializing in exceptional Japanese cuisine, including a multi-course sushi omakase dinner. Their omakase has received accolades from a global audience, so it’s a must if you eat here. They also offer a la carte items like sashimi, fresh nigiri, and tempura. You can sit at the chef’s counter and watch as Chef Jiro, who trained in Tokyo for 15 years before continuing at Hamano Sushi, prepares your food.

For a classic Italian experience, head to Bacco. They are open for lunch and dinner and offer authentic, homemade gnocchi, risotto of the day, Bolognese lasagna, and more.

Shopping

Noe Valley offers a great selection of boutique shopping, whether you’re in the market for jewelry, home goods, books, cards, or gifts. Some favorite shops in the area include When Modern Was, a unique retailer of art, furniture, and housewares. If you see something you like, you better buy it as there’s no guarantee it’ll still be there later in the day.

For a mix of books, toys, body care, and locally-crafted items, Wink is the go-to shop. They offer a variety of accessories, clothing, jewelry, and books. Noe Valley is also home to an incredible independent bookstore, Folio Books, which has a curated selection of titles, stationery, puzzles, games, and more.

On the culinary side, there’s Chocolate Covered, known as a San Francisco original for chocolates, and spotlights various craft and artisan chocolates worldwide. Perfectly Seasoned, an herb and spice shop with all kinds of hard-to-find ingredients, is worth exploring for new recipe ideas. They also sell loose-leaf teas, extracts and liquid flavorings, kits and boxed sets, and kitchenware. Their popular truffle parmesan seasoning adds unmatched flavor to eggs, vegetables, and mashed or baked potatoes.

Events, live music, and more

Noe Valley’s quaint town square is the heart of Noe Valley. This community area is exciting and has tables and chairs with sun umbrellas for relaxing, a small playground for kids, and plenty of space for events and live music. Depending on the day, you can find concerts, free yoga classes, or dance works in the town square. On Saturdays, the square hosts the farmers’ market year-round. Live music and various vendors sell everything from fresh produce to organic meats and honey to flavored almond milk, making it a great way to begin your morning.

Before enjoying the outdoors, stop by one of the numerous bakeries or cafes to pick out a selection of baked goods, then head to Mission Dolores Park for a picnic. It spans nearly 16 acres. Filled with flourishing green lawns shaded by large trees, it’s the perfect spot for a picnic. Here, you can relax, take in the views of the city’s skyline, and partake in a game of tennis.

If you’re looking for more stunning views, a hike to the top of Twin Peaks is the way to go. Twin Peaks offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the city, the bay, and the ocean. You can see Ocean Beach, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Mission District, and Potrero Hill from these prominent hills. Twin Peaks is also home to the Mission blue butterfly, a federally listed endangered species found in a few areas of San Francisco, Marin, and San Mateo counties.
